I wanted to explore the concept of disciplinary body practices as part of the everyday. I am very interested in the obsessive routine of cleanliness. In this piece, I paired visual of me washing my hands with audio of me bathing my body and washing my face.
We wash our hands before cooking, during cooking, before eating, after eating, after going to the bathroom, after blowing your nose, after touching an animal, after handling something dirty, and sometimes just because. On average, we wash our hands 10.8 times a day. We settle into this everyday practice of washing and bathing the body to removing dirt and other undesirables—physical traces of where we’ve been and what we’ve experienced.
